Is Stripe available in Kenya?

Not directly. Kenya appears on Stripe's country page under extended network, which routes to Paystack. That gives you Kenyan card acquiring, not the Stripe product a SaaS business is usually built around.

What Stripe actually offers Kenya

Verified July 28, 2026

Stripe (direct)
Excludes

Kenya is not among the countries where Stripe supports businesses. Kenyan entities cannot hold a Stripe account.

Paystack
Accepts

Kenya's extended-network entry on Stripe's page. A Stripe-owned company with a separate product — no Stripe Billing, Checkout or Connect.

Stripe via US LLC
Accepts

Stripe supports US businesses holding an EIN through ordinary self-serve signup.

M-Pesa
Excludes

Excellent domestic infrastructure, entirely domestic. Designed for Kenyan customers paying Kenyan merchants in shillings.

Provider country policies change without public notice — Mercury revised its prohibited list in 2024 and has amended it since. Treat this page as a starting point that was accurate on the date shown, then check the provider's own page before you apply. We would rather you verify us than trust us on something this consequential.

Extended network is Paystack, not Stripe

Kenya sits in Stripe's third tier alongside Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and South Africa. That entry routes to Paystack, which Stripe acquired in 2020. You get card acquiring for Kenyan customers; you do not get Stripe Billing, Checkout or Connect.

Kenya's legal position is comparatively open

Kenyan residents may invest abroad, with Central Bank approval required through the facilitating bank only above USD 500,000 — far above what forming an LLC involves. Foreign exchange purchases above roughly USD 10,000 require documentation of purpose. Compared with markets where outward investment is restricted outright, this is a straightforward starting point.

And the banking position is better than the region's reputation

Kenya is absent from Mercury's prohibited-countries list, unlike Nigeria. Most advice about African founders and US banking is written about Nigeria and does not describe Kenya. That combination — open banking, permitted outward investment, Stripe only via a US entity — makes the LLC route unusually clean here.

Worth knowing before you buy

If your customers are Kenyan, Paystack is likely the better answer and a US LLC is unnecessary overhead. The case for the LLC is specifically international: customers abroad paying in dollars, and a product that needs Stripe's subscription and marketplace tooling.

Common questions

Stripe's page lists Kenya. Why can't I sign up?

The listing is under extended network, which routes to Paystack rather than to a Stripe account. Stripe owns Paystack, which is why it appears there. Signing up gives you Paystack with Paystack's feature set.

Do I need Central Bank approval to form a US LLC?

Not at this scale. Kenyan residents need Central Bank approval through the facilitating bank for investments abroad exceeding USD 500,000. Ask a Kenyan tax adviser about declaring the holding — the right to hold it and knowing how to report it are different questions.

Should I just use Paystack?

If your customers are in Kenya, probably. If you are selling subscription software internationally and need Billing, Checkout or Connect, Paystack does not offer those and no amount of quality substitutes for a missing product.
