What it is
A real address, with a real person, in your state.
It is the legally required point of contact for your company. If someone sues the company, or the state needs to reach it, the documents are delivered to the registered agent's address. The state needs a real address where a real person can accept them during business hours, which is why a PO box does not qualify.
You may act as your own agent only if you have a street address in the formation state and are available there during business hours. A founder in Mumbai, Lagos or Dubai has neither. That is why the service exists — it is a requirement, not a convenience.

Why it matters
The notice you never received is the one that costs you.
It is rarely dramatic. The agent service expires, the state sends a notice nobody receives, an annual report goes unfiled, and the company drifts into bad standing — usually discovered months later when a bank or payment processor runs a check. Reinstatement costs more than the agent service did, and until then the company may not be able to open accounts or sign contracts.

A registered agent address is not a general business address. If you need somewhere to receive business mail, or an address to give Stripe or a bank, that is a different service with its own requirements. Do not assume the agent address covers both.

Yes, in every US state, from the day the LLC is formed. It is a condition of keeping the company, not an optional service. A company without one can fall out of good standing.
