Which US banks actually accept Kenyan founders?

Kenya does not appear on Mercury's prohibited-countries list — unlike Nigeria, its closest regional comparison. Read from the providers' own pages, not inferred from general advice about African founders.

Provider by provider

Verified July 28, 2026

Mercury
Accepts

Kenya is absent from Mercury's published prohibited-countries list.

Payoneer
Accepts

Payoneer serves Kenya, including USD receiving accounts.

Wise
Unverified

We did not confirm Kenya against Wise's country list directly. Check before relying on it.

Relay
Unverified

We could not reach Relay's country list. Unknown rather than assumed either way.

Provider country policies change without public notice — Mercury revised its prohibited list in 2024 and has amended it since. Treat this page as a starting point that was accurate on the date shown, then check the provider's own page before you apply. We would rather you verify us than trust us on something this consequential.

Kenya and Nigeria are not the same case

General advice about African founders and US banking is usually written about Nigeria, where Mercury, Relay and Wise all say no. Kenya is absent from Mercury's list. If you have been discouraged by regional advice, it may not describe your situation.

Kenya permits investing abroad, with a high threshold

Investments by Kenyan residents outside Kenya require Central Bank approval through the facilitating bank once they exceed USD 500,000. Forming an LLC costs a few hundred dollars, so that ceiling is not your constraint. Foreign exchange purchases above roughly USD 10,000 require documentation of purpose.

Stripe's Kenya listing is Paystack

Kenya appears on Stripe's availability page under extended network, which routes to Paystack. That is a real product but not a Stripe account — no Stripe Billing, Checkout or Connect. A US LLC with an EIN is what gives you Stripe itself.

Worth knowing before you buy

Two of the four providers here are marked unverified because we could not read their country lists directly, and we would rather say so than present a complete-looking table with guesses in it. Confirm Wise and Relay yourself if either matters to your plan.

Common questions

Can Kenyan founders open Mercury?

Kenya is not on Mercury's prohibited-countries list as of the date shown on this page. Approval is still subject to Mercury's own underwriting, but the country-level barrier that blocks Nigerian founders does not apply to Kenya.

Do I need Central Bank approval to form a US LLC?

Not at the scale of forming a company. Kenyan residents need Central Bank approval, through the facilitating bank, for investments abroad exceeding USD 500,000. Ask a Kenyan tax adviser about declaring the holding — the right to hold it is not the same as knowing how to report it.

Is Stripe available in Kenya?

Only through the extended network, which means Paystack rather than a Stripe account. If you need Stripe Billing, Checkout or Connect, a Kenyan-incorporated business will not get you there — a US LLC with an EIN will.
