Do you need a US business address?
Useful, frequently confused with the registered agent, and routinely oversold as a route to US banking. It gives you somewhere for post to arrive and something credible to put on an invoice. It does not give you a bank account.

Buying an address expecting it to unlock banking
This is the reason most founders buy one, and it is the one thing it does not do. Neobanks and traditional banks apply country policies based on where the beneficial owner resides — Mercury publishes a prohibited-countries list that includes several of the 16 countries we write guides for, and a Delaware mailbox does not move you off it. Worse, presenting an address as though it were your place of business when it is a forwarding service can look like misrepresentation during onboarding, which is a materially worse outcome than being declined. At $10 to $30 a month, an address bought for that purpose is $120 to $360 a year spent on the wrong problem. Buy it for mail and presentation, which are real benefits. Read our banking page for your country to find out what is actually open to you.
Address versus registered agent
The registered agent is a legal requirement in all 50 states: a person or company with a physical street address in your state of formation, available during business hours to receive service of process and official state correspondence. It costs $99 a year with us. A business address is a commercial convenience with no statutory role, typically $10 to $30 a month elsewhere. You must have the first. You may want the second. Services that blur them are usually selling the cheaper one as the more important.
Why the presentation actually matters
A US address on your invoices, contracts and website footer reads as a company that operates in the market it is selling to, and for enterprise clients that impression is not nothing. It sits alongside the entity, the EIN and the ability to submit a W-9 as things that reduce friction with US counterparties — none decisive on its own, cumulatively useful.
What to check before you buy one
Whether mail is scanned or only forwarded, and how quickly. Whether the provider accepts government post, which is where the item you must not miss will come from. And whether the address is one many other companies also use, which some counterparties do notice. A cheap address that delays your state correspondence by three weeks is worse than no address at all.
Worth knowing
A mailing address is a convenience, not a legal status. It does not create a US presence for tax purposes, does not satisfy the registered agent requirement, and does not affect a bank's country rules. If you have been told a US address will get you an account that your country of residence otherwise rules out, that advice is wrong and following it may cost you the application.
Common questions
Is a US business address the same as a registered agent?
No. The registered agent is a statutory requirement with a physical address in your state of formation, responsible for receiving legal and government notices. A business address is a commercial mail service with no legal role. You need the first regardless of whether you buy the second.
Will a US address help me open a bank account?
Generally not. Providers decide on where the beneficial owner lives, and several publish country lists that exclude markets we serve. An address does not change your residence, and presenting a mailbox as a place of business can create a bigger problem than the one it was meant to solve.
Can I use my registered agent's address as my business address?
Some agents permit it and many do not, because the agent address exists for service of process rather than commercial mail. Check before assuming. Using an address you are not authorised to use is a poor start with the one party that receives your legal notices.
Does having a US address create a US tax obligation?
Not by itself, but this is genuinely a question for a tax professional rather than for us. What creates US tax exposure depends on the nature of your activities, and a mailing address is one small fact among several an adviser would weigh.
