How is a US LLC taxed for an Egyptian founder?
Egypt has a US income tax treaty and does not restrict residents from investing abroad. The open question is what reporting duty attaches once you hold the company — and we could not resolve it.
Where Egypt stands
Verified July 28, 2026
Egypt appears on the IRS index of countries with a US income tax treaty in force.
US State Department investment climate reporting states Egypt does not restrict domestic investors from investing abroad.
We could not confirm whether a Central Bank of Egypt reporting or declaration duty attaches to holding a foreign company. Do not read this as 'none'.
A foreign-owned single-member LLC generally must file Form 5472 with a pro-forma 1120, whether or not tax is owed.
Provider country policies change without public notice — Mercury revised its prohibited list in 2024 and has amended it since. Treat this page as a starting point that was accurate on the date shown, then check the provider's own page before you apply. We would rather you verify us than trust us on something this consequential.
Egypt's structural position is comparatively favourable
A treaty in force, no restriction on investing abroad, and — unusually for the region — no country-level bar at Mercury. Egyptian founders start from a better position than most markets we cover, where at least one of those three is a problem.
Where the sources conflict
Reporting on Egypt's post-2024 foreign exchange reforms disagrees about whether a per-individual annual transfer threshold still applies. Some sources say a USD 100,000 convention persists, others report the CBE removed transfer limits. We are not going to pick one and publish it as fact on a page people make financial decisions from.
The float changed the picture materially
Egypt floated the pound in March 2024. The parallel market that traded well above the official rate was eliminated, reserves reached record levels, and the import backlog cleared. That does not remove currency risk, but it changes the calculation from 'can I access dollars at all' to 'do I want revenue landing in pounds'.
Worth knowing before you buy
Two of the four rows above are things we know; one is explicitly unverified. RazorFile is not a tax adviser and nothing here is advice. Ask an Egyptian tax adviser specifically about reporting duties for a foreign company — that is the gap we could not close.
Common questions
Can Egyptian residents invest abroad?
US State Department investment climate reporting states Egypt does not restrict domestic investors from investing abroad, with outward investment above USD 10bn in a recent fiscal year. The right to invest is not the constrained part here.
Do I have to declare the LLC to Egyptian authorities?
We could not verify whether a Central Bank of Egypt reporting duty attaches to owning a foreign company, and we found conflicting reporting on the current individual transfer threshold. That is a real gap in what we know. Ask an Egyptian tax adviser rather than treating our uncertainty as an answer.
Does the treaty help me?
Egypt is on the IRS treaty index, which is better than not. Whether it reduces tax on your particular income depends on income type, sourcing and residency — questions for a cross-border tax professional, not a formation service.
