Which US banks actually accept Indian founders?
India is not on Mercury's prohibited-countries list, which puts Indian founders in a stronger position than most of South Asia. The harder question is not the bank account โ it is LRS and FEMA.
Provider by provider
Verified July 28, 2026
India is absent from Mercury's published prohibited-countries list, unlike Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
Payoneer serves India with multi-currency receiving accounts.
We did not confirm India against Wise's country list directly for this page. Check before relying on it.
We could not reach Relay's country list. Unknown rather than assumed either way.
Provider country policies change without public notice โ Mercury revised its prohibited list in 2024 and has amended it since. Treat this page as a starting point that was accurate on the date shown, then check the provider's own page before you apply. We would rather you verify us than trust us on something this consequential.
The bank account is not your hard problem
Indian founders usually clear the banking step more easily than founders elsewhere in the region โ India is absent from the prohibited list that blocks Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali founders. The genuinely difficult part sits on the Indian side, in how you fund and report the company.
LRS and FEMA are the real question
Remitting money out of India to capitalise a foreign company runs through the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, and holding a foreign entity brings FEMA reporting obligations with it. Doola's India guide โ the most visible competitor page on this topic โ explains running a US company's Indian subsidiary and largely skips LRS mechanics entirely. Stripe Atlas's India guide does cover FEMA and ODI properly, but it is Delaware-only at a much higher price. Neither gap is your problem to solve unadvised: get an Indian chartered accountant who has done outbound structures.
What the LLC is actually for
For most Indian founders the objective is Stripe US and USD-denominated client relationships, because Razorpay and PayU are excellent domestically and cap you at INR customers. That objective is unaffected by the banking picture, which is comfortable here anyway.
Worth knowing before you buy
India is one of the few markets where the US-side steps are easier than the home-side steps. Do not let a smooth bank-account experience convince you the compliance side is equally simple โ LRS limits and FEMA reporting are where Indian founders actually get into trouble, and they are outside what any formation service can handle for you.
Common questions
Can Indian founders open Mercury?
India is not on Mercury's prohibited-countries list as of the date shown on this page. Approval is still subject to Mercury's own underwriting, but the country-level barrier that blocks founders across much of South Asia does not apply to India.
Do I need to report the LLC to Indian authorities?
Holding a foreign entity brings FEMA obligations, and funding it from India runs through the Liberalised Remittance Scheme with its own limits and reporting. The specifics depend on how you fund and structure it, which is why this needs an Indian chartered accountant rather than a formation service's summary.
Is a US LLC better than an Indian Pvt Ltd?
They solve different problems and many founders run both. The Pvt Ltd serves Indian customers and Indian operations; the US LLC exists to reach Stripe US, USD banking and US clients who prefer paying a US entity. Framing it as a replacement is usually the wrong model.
